Question: Is Jesus God? That is to say, does Jesus exemplify Godhood? Is Jesus, by nature, God? (Note: This is not necessarily using an “is” of idenitity; we are not asking “is Jesus identical to God”. Instead, it is an “is” of predication. The question is more like, “is Jesus King”? One can answer “yes,” while simultaneously saying that “and the Father is King”; they would be co-regents.
Jesus historically claimed to be God.[Forthcoming]
But, so what? Couldn't it simply be that… • Jesus was mistaken?[Forthcoming] • Jesus was lying?[Forthcoming]
There are a number of ways to argue for this.[Forthcoming] One can go a long way, however, by demonstrating that the first Christians worshipped and reverred Jesus as God. While I haven't read this yet, the best book out on the subject is widely regarded to be the one recently written by Larry Hurtado, How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God?: Historical Questions about Earliest Devotion to Jesus (Wm. B. Eerdmans, 2005)]. I will be reading it and incorporating its arguments into Belief Map as soon as I can.
